EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Technique. It is a mind/body tool that can clear physical and emotional blocks from your energy system using just your fingers and your intention. EFT is easy to learn and can be adapted to many situations, such as pain, phobias, stress, anxiety and addictions. EFT is primarily a self-help tool, and is sometimes referred to as emotional acupuncture or the people's technique.
EFT focuses on tapping the meridian points of the body to relieve the symptoms of a negative experience or emotion, (points pictured to the left). According to its developer Gary Craig, a disruption in energy is often the cause of negative emotion and pain. EFT is non-invasive, gentle and non-judgemental and can be adapted to many situations. Best results are achieved when issues are tackled separately, one at at a time.
EFT seems to calm the amygdala which is part of the limbic system located in the brain. The amygdala is the processing centre for emotions and memories.
We are all complex individuals and stress and anxiety are of course subjective. We all have our own unique set of experiences which lead us to feel anxious or nervous in certain situations, when others may not. EFT is a useful tool to have in your emotional toolbox, perhaps when facing transitions in life or learning to 'sit' with uncomfortable feelings rather than trying to bury them or self medicate. I believe EFT sits well alongside Mindful Reflexology, and I often advise clients to try it at home with positive results.
